Think Globally

"We have over 100 speakers, over 200 events, 50,000 to 60,000 in attendance, and we talk about every subject," says Ramsay Thurber, spokesman for the University of Colorado at Boulder's 59th annual Conference on World Affairs, which takes place today through Friday, April 13.

"We have our day-to-day lives, and we worry about our work and our kids and our homes," Thurber continues. "The conference really brings you back to ideals, and what is the human condition, and it inspires you in ways that you may not have been inspired before."

He's not kidding. Today's keynote speech — "The Middle East in an Era of Transnational Threats" — will be given by Judith Kipper from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Macky Auditorium. Another highlight is the jazz concert in Macky tomorrow from 8 to 10 p.m. "It's an international, first-class free concert," enthuses Thurber. "A conservative estimate: This would be a $150 ticket in New York. It's unbelievable. It's not to be missed."

And on Friday, at 3:30 p.m. in Macky, pay tribute to Molly Ivins in "A Moment NOT of Silence." "Bring your pots and pans," Thurber advises. "Molly is known to many as speaking truth to power. Basically, she was never one to sit down when she saw a challenge."
