True Blue

According to George McGovern in a Harper's essay titled "The Case for Liberalism," "Virtually every step forward in our history has been a liberal initiative taken over conservative opposition." While that should make a blue-state fellow like me smile, it actually makes me kind of sad.

With the 2008 presidential elections right around the corner and Democratic candidates scurrying toward the middle in hopes of regaining the White House, you're left wondering: Who's guarding our progressive ideals today? According to Laura Flanders's new book Blue Grit, if the Democrats hope to regain traditionally Republican states such as Nevada, Montana and Utah, they need to reach out to energized, alienated voters ranging from feminist and gay activists to Native American and African-American minority groups.

Meet Flanders when she discusses and signs her book tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Boulder Book Store, 1107 Pearl Street; admission is free. For more information, go to www.boulderbookstore.com.
