For 365 days of the past 23 years, my mother has given me nothing but unwavering love, guidance and support. And in return, I have given her nothing but the most sincere store-bought Mother's Day cards on exactly one day of each of those years. That is to say, I suck at being a son.

Not this year. This year I'm going to the Denver Botanic Gardens for its 58th annual Plant Sale to make up for more than two decades of son slackerhood. The sale has more than 85,000 rare and unusual plants to choose from, and I'm buying the most beautiful one and mailing it home. The package will probably arrive late, and the plant will most likely be dead after the thousand-mile journey, but hey, it's the pot that counts, right, Mom?

The sale runs today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gardens, 1005 York Street. Go to www.botanicgardens.org or call 720-865-3500 for more information.
