Breast Friends

One of the greatest things God ever did was to give Eve boobs (Lilith probably had them, too). That was a fantastic move on His part. You can dress them up or dress them down, hide them or bring them out to play. They're very useful to their owners when employed to distract the male gaze from some other body part. Sometimes my boyfriend uses mine as pillows when he's sleepy. And, of course, there's that whole feeding-babies thing that boobs can do.

Yep, boobs are pretty freakin' cool. But there's something dangerous and scary threatening boobs across the planet. It's called breast cancer. Luckily, the lovely ladies of LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails) are putting on their cancer-fighting uniforms and staffing the annual Breakfast for Boobs fundraiser, which takes place tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. at Hot Cakes Diner, 1400 East 18th Avenue. The women of LUPEC will wait tables, and proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Denver chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

"It's definitely one of our favorite events," says LUPEC president Gail Bransteitter. "We don't get to do that many 'dry' events; the majority involve cocktails. This one is for families, it's for moms, it's one of our most popular events. It feels like a community each time we do it.

"A lot of people come not having an association with any LUPEC members," Bransteitter adds. "They just hear about it and show up and want to share their stories and how they've personally been affected by breast cancer. It's such an open environment, and everyone is so grateful that we do it. We think it's really important."
