Off the Hook

Off the Wall's new DJs are out of control.

Who do Beth Medanich and Wesley Wayne think they are? Where do they get off aggressively disseminating information about — and voraciously recruiting people to — Denver's hippest weekly '70s and '80s dance party? Seriously stepping up the MySpace spam to promote themselves as Off the Wall's newest DJs would be one thing, but enlisting local artists to collaborate on handbills and fliers? Endeavoring to pack even larger hordes of sweaty, costumed drunks into the claustrophobic confines of the hi-dive? One hundred percent more ass shaking? It's two-fisted, it's shameless and it simply will not be tolerated.

"My goal is to have only enough space for people to comfortably walk," Medanich says masochistically. "Other than that, everybody dancing. No pretentious Chads. Just everybody having fun, dancing their asses off and enjoying the music, each other and all being together."

Don't be fooled, Denver. Medanich, aka DJ Bella, and Wayne — of Night of the Living Shred and What We Do Is Secret fame — intend to actually improve upon the foundation poured by DJs Jason Heller and Big Al nearly three years ago. No shit. That means more guest DJs, more incentives for dressing up, and more cheesy pop, punk rock, glam and disco.

"Al and I both seriously consider Wes the best DJ in Denver," Heller says. "Taste, skills — he's got it all, and he totally puts jokers like us to shame."

Uh-huh. Sure. It's $1 cover before 11 p.m. and $3 after; it's every Wednesday night at the hi-dive, 7 South Broadway; it's on the Internet at www.myspace.com/offthewalldenver; and it's downright disgusting. See you there.
