Growing Concern

Old Matelski had a farm ...

Naturally, an experiential artist like Denver live art maverick Eric Matelski would be fascinated by the city's bountiful network of community gardens. Gardening is a little like being an artist, after all, and galleries are like gardens. But how could Matelski blend the two separate communities?

"I really wanted to find a way to get people other than the gardeners themselves to come and see these gardens," he says. And so he struck up a deal with Denver Urban Gardens to host the Art Farm, a series of three outdoor art shows at the Troy Chavez Memorial Peace Garden, 3825 Shoshone Street, that will each correspond in size to the actual growing stages of the garden. The first show, Seedlings, which takes root this afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m., features smaller works by a field of local artists.

Full Bloom blossoms on July 21, and Harvest rolls out toward the end of the summer. For details, visit www.ericmatelski.com or www.dug.org.
