Funky Beats

If music is like a body, then percussion is the skeleton — the framework that holds everything together and gives it shape. Your musical osteologist would recommend attending drumming clinics to keep those bones strong.

So do something good for your rhythm and sign up for the Black Lamp drummers' workshop at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder. Medeski Martin & Wood beatkeeper Billy Martin, who's performed with a range of artists from John Scofield to Iggy Pop, is teaming up with Brazilian percussionist and composer Cyro Baptista, who's worked on Grammy-winning albums such as Yo-Yo Ma's Obrigado Brasil and Herbie Hancock's Gershwin's World, to focus on Brazilian, West/Central African and funk drumming. There are two workshops today, one from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and another from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.; each costs $80. Black Lamp will raise the rafters with a performance tonight at 8:30 p.m. for only $20. Call 303-998-9412 or visit www.bouldertheater.com for information.
