Raised Voices

Having grown up in a black Baptist church, I can tell you this: There isn't a better place to find great singing and even greater drama. My grandmother made me attend to save my soul, but I went for the frequent fights between the giant-hat-wearing ladies in the front row.

Not everyone has had the good fortune to witness the entertainment that filled my Sunday mornings, but the latest offering at the New Denver Civic Theatre is the next best thing. Sista's and Storytellers follows six former youth choir members who have gathered together over a weekend for their 25-year reunion. There is sure to be some crying, some shouting — and it wouldn't be a choir gathering without a little gossip. With the ever-exhilarating Hazel Miller in the cast, count on some fantastic singing as well.

The production makes its world premiere tonight in the Civic's Black Box Cabaret and continues every Thursday through August 30. Tickets are $24.95. Go to www.denvercivic.com or call 303-309-3773 for more information.
Thursdays, 8 p.m. Starts: June 7. Continues through Aug. 30
