Flick Pick

Jason Bosch, sole dynamo behind the weekly ArgusFest human-rights film series, originally planned to screen the Errol Morris documentary, Standard Operating Procedure, a stark look at the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, tonight at the Mercury Cafe. But he changed his mind when he decided to also host the fest's annual Fair Trade Holiday Bazaar tonight, as well. Instead, ArgusFest will present What Would Jesus Buy?, a docu-comedy that rips consumerism to shreds, from the Mall of America to the streets of New York City, with help from the fictional Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir.

"I think What Would Jesus Buy? is a better fit for the bazaar than a film about torture," Bosch notes in his weekly e-blast. "For some reason, torture doesn't put people in a very festive mood, and I want festive at this bazaar."

So is Bosch sending a mixed message here? Shop, but don't shop? What gives? We have to say no. He's really on the up and up, considering that the bazaar's wares are exclusively fair trade items and all sales benefit the Third-World makers. Hit the Merc, 2199 California Street, beginning at 7 p.m.; admission is a $5 donation. For details, check out the ArgusFest website at www.argustfest.org.
