Are You Game?

I was always so pathetic at sports that going pro didn't even register as a fantasy. But now, with the rise of pro video-gaming as a phenomenon, I'm thinking it's time to start a rigorous diet and training regimen and take my shot at being a contender. I'm stocking up on Mountain Dew and Cheetos and limbering up my thumbs for the Colorado Cutthroat Console Tournament, today and tomorrow at the Tivoli Turnhalle on the Auraria campus. The competition — the largest in the region, according to organizer Gregory Richardson — is expected to draw up to 300 players for two days of intense fragging and virtual beatdowns for bragging rights and cash prizes.

Players will compete in some of today's most popular games, including Halo 2, Soul Calibur 3 and Super Smash Bros. Melee, for purses of up to $3,000, depending on the number of entrants. Each tournament has its own entry fee, but spectators get in free. For details, visit www.ccct2k.com/main.html or call 303-808-7746.
Fri., June 22, 5 p.m.; Sat., June 23, 10 a.m.
