Fat Tired Out

Celebrate mountain biking in Crested Butte.

Today kicks off the 27th annual Fat Tire Bike Week in Crested Butte. From now through June 30, this celebration of all things mountain bike will take over the town. Cycling enthusiasts of all experience levels will find something to love, from guided tours of the local trails to a chainless downhill competition.

The festival also offers an expo area for manufacturers to display the newest gear, as well as a beer garden where riders can refresh themselves and non-cycling companions can idle away the day. The highlight of the week is the chainless downhill event, a high-speed race that includes a townie division where anything goes. "You'll see everything," says coordinator Erin Cerise. Last year, she recalls, "we had recliners out there." Other highlights include a screening of the mountain-biking movie Kranked, a kids' fair and a pig roast with live music.

Tickets are $90 for a week-long pass or $25 for a single day. More information, including a full schedule, can be found at www.ftbw.com or by calling the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-545-4505.
