Frida At Last

The cult of Kahlo needs no explanation: Frida Kahlo, the artist, is already fascinating for her wholly original work, but when you view her in terms of her historical and social milieu — well, what more is there to say? She was born an icon.

The Hungarian-born photographer Nickolas Muray, Kahlo's friend and lover in the 1930s and '40s, clearly shared that view: He shot her in dozens of poses over the years they knew each other, resulting in a treasury of images lost to the world until they were found in a trunk in 1993 by Muray's daughter.

Fifty of Muray's prints — including snapshots taken of Kahlo with and without husband Diego Rivera, plus verité moments of her at work — go on display today in Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray, at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center's FAC Modern building, 121 South Tejon Street in downtown Colorado Springs.
