Play Time

It's hard being a writer. For one thing, your family is always asking you what you're doing with your life, and your girlfriend just can't understand why you want to spend more time with your computer than with her. It's a tough sell on all sides, so anyone who writes for the stage should thank the theater gods for an event like the Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region.

"In a snapshot, fashion producers, directors and the community can come together to see all original plays," says Pamela Mencher, showcase coordinator. "From a nineteen-state Western region, 154 people submitted original work, and thirty plays were chosen for staged readings."

Starting at 9:30 a.m. today and continuing through Saturday, thirty original plays ranging from short to one-act, children's to full-length, will be given some badly needed stage time. "These plays range from serious issues, like the Iraq War, to more lighthearted, like a radio show that takes place in a haunted basement," says Mencher.

In addition, there are workshops sprinkled throughout the showcase. Events today and Thursday are at Red Rocks Community College, 13300 West Sixth Avenue, while Friday and Saturday’s activities will take place at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Boulevard. The cost ranges from $110 for full registration to $15 for individual sessions. For more information, visit www.rrcc.edu/playwrightshowcase.
