What’s implied in the hip design store Mod Livin’s name has taken benevolent shape in Happiness Is a Mod Puppy, a unique benefit auction for the Downtown Animal Care Foundation. Featuring a pack of Eero Aarnio plastic puppies decorated by local artists and businesses — including Westword style blogger the Cat’s Pajamas — the auction was conceived as a total win-win package.

“We just decided it would be fun to do, and all the proceeds will be donated to the animals,” says dog-loving Mod Livin’ owner Jill Warner. “But it’s also a way for local small businesses to market themselves.” And the entries, meant to reflect the spirit of each business, are pouring in.

“I’m amazed at how good they all are,” Warner adds. Consider Mod Livin’s own dog, which resembles an Eames rocker; the Skye’s puppy, an outdoor picnic pastiche with dog poop on its head; Larabar’s candy-wrapper-strewn entry; or the Kirkland Museum’s dotted puppy that looks as if it crawled right out of one of Vance Kirkland’s splashy nebulae. And that’s just a smattering of what’s available for the bidding tonight.

Drop by Mod Livin’, 5327 East Colfax Avenue, for a fun, free evening of art adoptions, good eats and spins from 6 to 9 p.m.; for details, call 720-941-9292 or visit http:// www.modlivin.com.
