Way of the Buffalo

Celebrate the Wild West.

This year’s Buffalo Bill Days, the annual Wild West celebration in Golden, requires an entire weekend and then some in order to fit in all the activities. Yesterday was the annual golf tournament and awards buffet, and today visitors can enjoy a Chamber of Commerce luncheon, but the real fun begins tomorrow with live entertainment and kids’ activities and continues on Saturday and Sunday.

“Saturday is the pancake breakfast, which is kind of cool,” says the fest’s Deborah Dix. “It’s the big fundraiser for the Golden Fire Department. Also on Saturday is the parade, which is always a lot of fun. Right after the parade is the Wild West Show, where they clear the street and have some rope tricks and kind of a duel with fake pistols. That all pays tribute to what Buffalo Bill used to do with his Wild West Show.”

In other words, it’s a celebration jam-packed with history and fun; other highlights include a mutton-bustin’ competition and a special presentation at Clear Creek History Park, where onlookers can enjoy Saturday’s parade, sip genuine old-fashioned root beer and watch costumed Civil War soldiers demonstrate a cannon-firing drill. Buffalo Bill Days are free and run through Sunday; visit www.buffalobilldays.com for information and a full schedule of events.
