Short and Sweet

At the Crested Butte Reel Fest, small really is better. Set in one of Colorado's sweetest little resort towns, the five-day juried showcase of one-reel films is a cozy affair, where everyone knows everyone else by the time it's all over. And it's fun, too, offering such programs as Films You Shouldn't See Alone: Colorado Cult Classics; Films Your Mother Wouldn't Want You to See; and, debuting this year, the first annual Sport Shorts.

"We're smaller than some festivals, and not so glamorous," says Reel Fest director Sara Pinsoneault. And, she adds, there's nothing quite like a quickie to keep film-goers interested: "If you don’t like one film, you can just wait five or ten minutes and there's another film on the screen."

Reel Fest begins tonight with an opening-night party at 5 p.m. at Calypso, 226 Elk Avenue, followed at 7:30 by an evening with filmmaker Joan Churchill at the Crested Butte Center for the Arts, 606 Sixth Street. Screenings continue through August 12; tickets are $10 to $15 per screening or $125 for an all-inclusive VIP pass. For details, go to www.crestedbuttereelfest.com.
