Shower Power

I always love catching the Perseid Meteor Shower, a rain of "shooting stars" visible in early August every year. Of course, normally I'm catching the shower by accident when leaving whatever bar or club I'm frequenting. City light pollution dims the effect, though, and who's going to find a nice, dark place to watch a meteor shower at 1 a.m.?

The wonderful people at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center, that's who! In the wee hours of this morning at Alderfer/Three Sisters Park, 30101 Buffalo Park Road in Evergreen, astronomy team members will be at hand to give a short lecture "about the comet that produced the meteors, what a meteor is, why they have to be there at one in the morning, some of the pieces of what makes a meteor shower happen, and why this one is so regular," explains interpretive specialist Peg Alig. "It's supposed to be a really good shower this year," she continues, because it's a new moon and the park is situated well away from Denver's light pollution.

Be at the observation point from 1 to 4 a.m. and be sure to bring a chaise lounge or sleeping bag on which to recline. Call 720-497-7600 to register or to get more information. And check the weather reports; a cloudy sky means no meteors to watch.
