Carp Diem

Fly-fishing gets serious at the South Platte Pro-Am Carp Slam.

The carp, long considered just a trash fish, moves to the top of the heap today when a crew of carp-lovers holds the first-ever South Platte Pro-Am Carp Slam — a fly-fishing tournament right in the heart of Denver. Not only will each participant be placed with a fly-fishing pro for two three-hour sessions on the Platte, but master of ceremonies (and master fisherman) Barry Reynolds, author of Carp on the Fly, will also offer a fly-fishing demonstration at mid-day. The entry fee is $175, but the proceeds will be used by the Denver chapter of Trout Unlimited on projects along the river. In addition, the fee buys a chance at prizes including Scott and Elkhorn fly rods, as well as lunch and post-fishing festivities at Andrews on Lincoln, 1111 Lincoln Street. Andrews is also the spot to gather for the Slam, at 7 a.m. We're hooked! For more information, go to www.denvertu.org.
