Wholly Unholy

A new production plays the good book for laughs.

Nick Sugar, who's directing The Bible: The Complete Word of God (Abridged), concedes that "there are liberties taken" in this comic adaptation of the ultimate bestseller, which opens tonight. And that's an understatement of biblical proportions.

Appropriately, the extravaganza begins with Earth's creation and concludes with a number called "Armageddon: The Musical." In between, actors Chris Boeckx, Seth Ciakowski and Eric Mather will offer the top ten rejected commandments, which change from night to night (they're not set in stone), and baptism scenes rendered with the help of Super Soakers.

"If you want to laugh and you don't get offended easily, come see it," Sugar advises. "If you do get offended easily, stay home."

The show gets under way at 7:30 p.m. at the Avenue Theater, 417 East 17th Avenue, and runs through October 27. Tickets are $20 to $24, with assorted discounts available. To learn more, phone 303-321-5925 or visit www.avenuetheater.com.
