Kong Fu

The fastest person in the world. The most career home runs. The best Donkey Kong player of all time. These achievements may seem inconsequential to outsiders, but to the people who pursue them, they can mean everything. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters follows the heated rivalry between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell, the world's two best Donkey Kong contenders, as they vie for the highest possible score on the arcade classic. It might sound like a real snoozer — not to mention the world's biggest dorkfest — but it plays out as a classic tale of striving for perfection, an archetypal sports rivalry in which the winner is determined not on a field, but on a glowing screen populated by a pixelated ape and plumber. The film opens tonight at Starz FilmCenter, 900 Auraria Parkway. The first showing is at 4:45 p.m., and tickets are $8.75, $6.75 for seniors and during matinees.
