Off to See the Wizard

"I thought, 'Wouldn't it be fun to do a show with works taking whimsical ideas from The Wizard of Oz, or abstracting ideas from The Wizard of Oz — just using it as a starting point for inspiration?" says Kim Harrell of East End Applied Arts. Fun, indeed: Harrell's idea has bloomed into Over the Rainbow, a collection of work by twelve artists who based their art on different aspects of the 1939 film based on the L. Frank Baum novel and starring Judy Garland.

"Somebody who's an Oz freak and comes in expecting to see Dorothy and everybody might be disappointed," Harrell continues, "because it's not any kind of literal use of those images. It's taking it to another level." See just how far over the rainbow these artists went at an opening reception tonight from 5:30 to 8 p.m.; attendees are encouraged to wear Oz-themed clothing and accessories (it's a perfect time to break out those ruby-red shoes). East End Applied Arts is at 1556 Florence Street in Aurora, and the show runs through October 27; call 720-203-3575 or visit www.eastendarts.com.
