Just before The Matrix Revolutions was released, I had an in-depth conversation with several graduate philosophy students about the Matrix series up to that point. It was just as lofty and cerebral as you might imagine, with the obligatory references to René Descartes's Discourse on the Method and a long argument about whether Neo had free will or was simply a pawn in the Architect's master chess game. And while the series is rife with Christian symbolism — Neo as the One who would save humankind, not to mention the fact that the human stronghold is called Zion — perhaps the only thing our philosophical discussion didn't include was a Buddhist interpretation.

Today at the Academy of Chinese Martial and Cultural Arts, 1750 38th Street in Boulder, Shifu Jian Hu (the Abbott of the Chung Tai Zen Center in Sunnyvale, California) will discuss Buddhism Meets The Matrix, focusing on the first film in the series and using clips from the movie to illustrate the Buddhist connection.
