Secret Agents

The Colorado Avalanche season starts tonight.

The Colorado Avalanche is thirsty, and only a really big cup can quench that thirst. After an all-time low end to their 2006-2007 season — they fell just short of the playoffs for the first time in their eleven years as the Avs — the boys in burgundy and white have a brand-new bag. Make that three brand-new bags. Three newly recruited free agents — Jaroslav Hlinka, Ryan Smyth and Scott Hannan — have come to Colorado to rally behind an Avalanche victory. "With a guy like Joe Sakic leading the charge, we have every opportunity to win," said Smyth in his first press conference. It's clear the Avs are giving it their all.

Tonight, the buzz goes to the test at the Pepsi Center, 1000 Chopper Circle, where the season opener against the Dallas Stars hits the ice at 7:30 p.m. And while you might be able to get tickets from well-connected friends or incognito scalpers brandishing clever "I Need a Ticket" signs, you probably won't find any at Ticketmaster.com, where you should have bought them weeks ago for $24 to $209.
Tue., Sept. 25; Wed., Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m.; Sat., March 8, 1 p.m., 2007
