Razing a Ruckus

Generations of University of Colorado at Boulder art students have called the old Sibell-Wolle art building home since it opened its doors in the 1930s, but now the place is toast, scheduled for demolition later this fall to make way for a state-of-the-art replacement projected to open in 2010. Hence the two-day exhibition TOAST, during which more than 100 artists will bid farewell to the structure's nooks and crannies with fondly fashioned site-specific works.

"It's a celebration of the new building as well as a way to say goodbye to the old one," spokeswoman Valerie Albicker says, noting that many students begged for the chance to hang a last show in the building, which closed in August, to no avail. "But then we realized we needed a way to let the community know about the new complex," she adds, so the call went out for participants, yielding positive replies from a who's-who of CU art students, faculty and alumni.

See TOAST tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. or tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission is free. Call 303-492-2539 or visit www.colorado.edu/arts/events/toast2.html.
Fri., Oct. 5, 5-8 p.m.; Sat., Oct. 6, 12-5 p.m., 2007
