Three of a Kind

Thank goodness for eBay. During a visit to the site, violinist Josie Quick found a copy of 1966's Violin Summit, a long-out-of-print recording that teamed string pros Stephane Grappelli, Svend Asmussen, Jean-Luc Ponty and Stuff Smith — and she was so taken by the results that she decided to create a version of her own. At tonight's Violin Summit, Quick and fellow fiddlers Julia Hays and Lionel Young will tackle a few tunes Grappelli and company covered, as well as plenty they didn't. "I'm hoping to throw some blues in there, since that's Lionel's specialty, and I teach blues at Swallow Hill," she says. "And we'll probably do some Latin jazz, some gypsy jazz — lots of things under the jazz umbrella."

Sounds like a winning bid.

Strings will be plucked beginning at 8 p.m. at Swallow Hill Music Hall, 71 East Yale Avenue. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 on show day. For more information, phone 303-777-1003 or visit www.swallowhillmusic.org.
