John Creamer and Stephane K.

The Church

Vocal house doesn't always have to be diva-tastic, and John Creamer and Stephane K. have done their best to prove that. After a series of remixes for everyone from Satoshi Tomiie to Sinéad O'Connor pushed the pair into the top strata of remixers, John Digweed recruited them to produce a mixed CD for his Bedrock label. The result was a glorious celebration of drugged-out tribal percussion, progressive darkness and deep house thump. As producers and DJs, Creamer and K. tend to favor vocal tracks, but they build up twisted grooves to lay underneath them. The vocalists they choose avoid the stereotypical squealing disco histrionics of so many house vocalists, favoring a more soulful, restrained style. Yes, it can get a bit cheesy at times, but more often than not, the duo (coming to the Church this Thursday, October 11) strikes a nice balance between the beats, effects and melody to create a dirty late-night sound.
