Burning the Man

Get behind the scenes in the Nevada desert.

From the psychedelic installation art, unusual costumes and hippie-dippy trade-and-barter mentality to the lunar-like panorama and oddly named camps and villages — not to mention the forty-foot pyrotechnic dude who inspired it all — everyone seems to know something about Burning Man. But how much do you really know about this artists' Eden and the fleeting Black Rock City it gives rise to over seven days and nights? And even if you know all the ten-point questions, what happens when you get into Double Jeopardy?

Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Boulder Public Library's Canyon Theater, 1000 Canyon Boulevard, the film Burning Man: Beyond Black Rock takes you through the rarely seen nuts and bolts of creating this eccentric vision. Granted behind-the-scenes access, filmmakers spent eighteen months with the founders, organizers, artists and participants. They were there from the initial meetings right through the setup, the freak show and the fruition of the "without a trace" idealism.

According to Robin Beeck, executive director of the Boulder International Film Festival, the film is "funny and exciting. We thought it would be perfect to screen because the atmosphere around Halloween is so fun. At the last screening, about half of the audience dressed up." So come in costume, or come as you are, or come naked (actually, that's illegal, hippie). Just don't miss this rare opportunity to see what it takes to transform a desert playa into the seventh-largest city in Nevada.

Keeping in the spirit of Burning Man — or not — the event is free. For more information, go to www.boulder.lib.co.us/films/.
