Knight of the Animals

Chess is a serious game — but Colorado closed-chess champion Brian Wall knows it can be fun, too. That's why he and co-author Anthea Carson wrote How to Play Chess Like an Animal, which they'll introduce this afternoon. The book teaches kids and other novices strategy using examples literally drawn from the animal kingdom; illustrations by former Hanna-Barbera animator Linn Trochim are included. "Take the tiger," Wall notes. "I diagram a position and say, 'You have to be patient like a tiger — and then pounce when the time is right!'"

As for Wall, he'll be costumed as a lion at today's get-together, and any chess player who bests him — "which could totally happen," he says — will receive a free copy of the book. That puts some teeth in the promotion.

The mane event begins at 1 p.m. at the Tattered Cover's LoDo locale, 1628 16th Street; admission is free. Learn more by calling 303-436-1070 or by visiting www.tatteredcover.com.
