Snakes Alive

If you had the misfortune to be trapped in a tragic Greek myth, one of the worst positions you could possibly find yourself in is that of Medusa. Once a beautiful nymph with many suitors, Medusa caught the attention of Poseidon, the Lord of the Sea. When Poseidon raped Medusa in the temple of Athena, the goddess of wisdom was offended. Athena transformed Medusa's lovely locks into serpents and made her once-beautiful face so terrible that she turned any man who gazed upon her to stone.

It didn't get any better for poor Medusa: Pregnant with Poseidon's spawn, she was beheaded in her sleep by the hero Perseus. Tonight at 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 South Allison Parkway, see what the David Taylor Dance Theatre and the Colorado Chamber Players made of this myth during the world premiere of Medusa. The work features the music of André Caplet, Dmitri Shostakovich and Erwin Schulhoff. Also on the bill are "The Storm," a Dracula-inspired pas de deux; "Araignee," a duet of dueling black widow spiders by choreographer Gary Abbot; "Bats and Spirits," from David Taylor's Rainforest; and a new work by choreographer Amy Anderson set to Camille Saint-Saëns's "Danse Macabre." Tickets are $8 to $22; call 303-987-7845.
Sat., Oct. 27, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., Oct. 28, 2 p.m., 2007
