David Halberstam

Boulder Book Store

Respected journalist David Halberstam is the next subject of Powell's Books' Out of the Book project, which makes short films about famous authors (award-winning writer Ian McEwan was the focal point of the first Powell's offering). The 28-minute film showcases Halberstam's work, focusing largely on the journalist's final book, The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War, which uses first-person interviews and detailed historical research to examine the Korean War by including the relevant geopolitics and incorporating the viewpoints of involved soldiers.

Halberstam was killed April 23 this year in a tragic traffic accident. His work reporting on the Vietnam War earned him a Pulitzer Prize and spawned such books as The Making of a Quagmire, One Very Hot Day, The Best and the Brightest and Ho. He was also recognized for his sports reporting and for Firehouse, a book about the 9/11 tragedy and Engine 40, Ladder 35 of the New York City Fire Department. This Out of the Book presentation includes commentary from Joan Didion, Seymour Hersh, Robert Caro and Bob Woodward, as well as historical footage of Halberstam; it screens Tuesday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Boulder Book Store, 1107 Pearl Street.
