Glendale Prostitution Sting Has Fringe Benefits

What was blown besides this cop's cover?

The two women that Mike Gross had ordered from Craigslist were running late, and he suspected they might not show, so he found two more in the back of Westword. But the second duo's phone number led him right back to the first pair he'd called, one of whom proceeded to yell at him for the transgression. Still, the women agreed to meet Gross in his room at the Staybridge Suites Hotel in Glendale.

"Hiiii there," Tatiana said when she arrived, her partner, Mia, standing quietly by her side. "How are you?"

"How are you?" replied Gross, the undercover john in this May 18 prostitution sting.

"You look kinda scary," Tatiana said, according to a recorded transcript.

"Please," Gross said. "I've never had anybody call me up on the phone and yell at me before."

"Well, yeah, that's me. I like to yell at people," she said. "Did I scare you? Come on."

"I'm a little scared. There's two of you and one of me."

"It's okay. We like to team up on guys. It's good to get abused every now and then. Don't you know that? Okay, I'm going to check your room real quick — okay, security! Security! Just making sure you're not Mr. Poliiiice Man."

"Why, do I look like the police?"

"Yes, you do, actually, to tell you the truth," Tatiana said.

"Why?"

"'Cuz you do."

"Why? 'Cuz I'm white?" Gross asked.

"You've got that look in your eye."

"Why, 'cuz I'm that brown-haired white guy?"

"You've got that look, that asshole look in your eye. I see you got condoms all over. Why is that? Are you just excited, or do you think you're going to use all these? No. You're only using one, so pick what color," Tatiana said. "You're not that big, are you?"

"Nope."

"Yeah, we'll rule those out," she said. "Nice try, though."

"Sooooo..." Gross said.

"So it's simple," Tatiana said. "We'll start off with a massage. Lay your butt down."

1608539.36.jpg Check out this slide show of mug shots from the Glendale sting, these transcripts of audio recorded during two busts, and a glossary of industry terms to guide the uninitiated through the world of prostitution.

According to the report Gross would later file, "Tatiana directed me to remove the towel that I was wearing and lay down on the bed for my massage. Tatiana and Mia both began massaging my back, buttocks and legs." Later, Gross asked for his turn to massage them, and they took off their shirts and lay on the bed. While he massaged them, the women talked about a porno playing on the TV.

"That is huge."

"Oh, yeah." [Both laugh.]

"She's trying to deep-throat that motherfucker, huh?"

"Uh, she can't."

"Wow, that's huge."

"Yeah."

"Look, and she uses both hands."

"It's like a Chipotle burrito."

The conversation continued until Gross asked when he would get to see the two women together. "Soon soon soon," Tatiana said. "But first we're gonna play with you."

At this point, Lieutenant Gross of the Glendale Police Department would later write in his report, "both Tatiana and Mia grabbed my penis and Tatiana began placing a condom on my penis while Mia held it."

The recording stops shortly after that, before other officers entered the room and arrested Tatiana and Mia. They were among nine women and one man (a female officer busted the man) picked up as part of the operation, dubbed the "Father's Day Special." The sting and the Glendale Police Department's handling of it are now under investigation by the Arapahoe County District Attorney's Office, although that office won't discuss specifics.

Gross began the operation with a sexy and petite Asian, who, for $300 an hour, offered the "Ultimate Girlfriend Experience," according to police records.

Also that day, Gross called 21-year-old "Honey," who told him she could be his for $125. Gross said he was prepared to offer $150. Honey promised to make it worth his while. According to Gross's report, Honey arrived in the room and then asked for her "donation." After he paid, she disrobed and seated Gross on the bed, removed his towel and placed her hand on his penis. Honey's three rules were no kissing, always wear a condom, and no "Greek" (anal sex). He agreed and gave the arrest signal.

Gross also called on Marie, a Native American woman whose Craigslist resumé included full service, French, hand jobs, deep French kissing, "dinner at the Y" (cunnilingus) and the "girlfriend" or "porn star" experience. According to his report, Marie removed his towel and reached for his penis, but he pulled back.

Gross ordered another tag team that evening, Heavenly and Dallas. Having sex with them was like having sex with Liza Minnelli and Bette Midler — "not for everyone, but worth the ride" — according to a former customer who reviewed the duo on a hooker messenger board that Gross reviewed before the sting.

He also arranged a $200 date with a Chinese woman who spoke enough English to tell Gross that he could have sex with her only once. "I then asked her, using hand signals, if she would perform oral sex on me, and she again nodded yes," Gross wrote in his report, adding that she proceeded to "slap" his penis.

Very interesting article. Many years ago, I worked side by side with Lt/Captain Mike Gross, when he was a patrolman. I was not surprised to read about his questionable involvement in this case. Any other professional department would not have had a commanding officer directly involved in such a case, it would have been a patrol officer. Ofc Gross did many other questionable activies back in the day. Trust me I am sure he did not get promoted by saving lives of others or children, he probably has spent most of his time with his nose up Chief Victors *ss. Their friendship goes way back. The Chief is the calibur of person as Gross. Trust me....

I think that you all need to pull your heads out of your asses. These are not common street walking prostitutes, these are escorts! What's the difference? Well for starters, the "john" calls the escort. Escorts DO NOT stand on the street advertising their services, unlike the common street walking prostitute. An escort would not stand outside your childs school and offer blowjobs. Everyone needs to get there facts straight. And here is a little lesson in economics, demand = supply. If people weren't paying for it, there wouldn't be any. So, let those that live without sin cast the first stone. You know who you are, sitting before your computer, surfing the internet for free porn, hoping that your wife, girlfriend, husband or boyfriend doesn't walk in and catch you giving yourself a little thrill. You are all looking at something at some point wondering how great it would feel to fuck it. Humans are animals, and sex is not just for procreation. Jesus loved a prostitute, and it's the OLDEST profession in the world!!!!!!!! Get a clue! And for everyone that copied and pasted an ad, well, you are busted as well, you went and you looked, curiosity has already killed you. Just admit that while you were in there "innocenly" looking around, you opened a couple, maybe more, and you were intrigued. You are not a pervert, or a bad person, you are only human! Just look at yourselves before you pass judgement!

ok, one more thing i cant keep back.....to all u idiots that are debating and defending such a waste of our tax dollars by discussing protocal in such a sting...lets look at the facts of THIS case. 9 arrested. all misdemenors. one druggie,,,who thanks to that fact probly will be the one to skate on all charges. subsequently missing a possible chance at rehabillitation. no underage girls. no street walkers, no dui, nothing but a few people shamed and fined. what dollar amount was spent and wgat recouped. what nuicense to society eratticated? Im sure these girls havent all of a sudden gone to work at wendy's. they are working now to pay the tickets off. be real. I am suprised how our judgements of sex blur what is crime and what is a vice cops drem gig. clean up streetwalkers...drugs...all.of.it. not adults whose only crime is bein upfront about their wants n needs. I can do 15 men a day and its ok....til one of them compensates

  • na 11/17/2007 12:06:00 AM

Just curious, did anyone think about the safety of the 'informant' you outed and posted pictures of at the same time..... 1 of 9 is a snitch?hmmmmmmmmm...hope you warn that chick b4 you got another headline. i dont condone any of her choices....(oh, except the choice to set a dollar value on what mainstream females are swindled out of if not robbed of everyday, probly safer than legal drunken fornicating i geuss the laws are protecting??'...but as journalists you needent amplify the poor girl's consequenses.cmon I mean really. i do believe the ad revenue from these "hookers", as you referto these women in your article, pay at least a percentage of your wages. I personally could care less what consenting adults do behind closed doors....and if the worst thing a cop does is touch a girl...with her consent then we are doin good! Im sure somewhere within the law enforcement community there is ACTUAL corruption...life threatening corruption...something worth reporting...something that might bring about a change of somesort. I really doubt anyone but the officers wife cares if his penis was teased a bit,,,,blue balls for him, who wins there? I would be interested in a story maybe with real importance, real corruption, Im sure the state of our world has many more important things to "expose" than a vice cops woody and misdemenear crime....wasteful,irresponsible,and hardly news! either you are incompetant, lazy,or just prostitutes yourselves, turning journalistic forums into bubblegum fluff, to appeaese your advertisers,,,,and yet one more peice in a machine of distrations, lulling america to sleep. Where is real journalism???? I miss Hunter S Thompson....hey,theres a juicy story....show me your balls, westword, do a story on that local conspiracy. A real one this time including the pedophiles of washington he was just about to expose when he was murdered....anyway... I wont hold my breath. Wishing you all love, and a happy day today tomarrow and onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn and onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

In response to D.Hopkins, comment 15: Let's make a distinction here. The women arrested in these stings were not street hookers. They were escorts. It's a fuzzy distinction, but an important one because of this: Many escorts get into call-girl work through the strip club industry. Often strippers (not all, but many) will work at clubs part of the week to find new clients and contacts and escort on the side. This is important to point out to all of you law-and-order types over there in Glendale since your city has long survived off the tax dollar tit of Facinations and strip clubs, namely Shotgun Willy's. Oh yeah, we seem to have forgotten about Shotgun Willy's, whose owners have sat in major political positions in Glendale for years. So before anyone calls out the hypocracy of Westword printing escort adds, let's not forget that all Glendale is doing is cracking down on one type of skin trade while profiting off another. How many stings have the Glendale police conducted at Shotgun Willy's? That's a stat I'd really like to see. So, Hopkins, while you prop Glendale up for supposedly making Colorado safer by luring all the criminals to the postage stamp-sized city, you forget that Glendale has long been better known as Denver's red light district for the wealthy. In other words, the criminals were already coming! Glendale cops are just getting naked in anticipation.

I feel that our society needs to re-open a debate on whether prostitution should even be illegal. I understand the negative impacts associated with having street-walkers roam freely down the city avenues. I also completely understand the need to prevent minors from engaging in prostitution But what I fail to see in our free society, is why consenting and capable decision-making adults should be restricted from conducting these types of activities in the privacy of their own homes.

Here's your 2006 Glendale Police Crime Statistics: Reported Arrests The arrest statistics are based on the number of individuals arrested by a particular agency. An individual is counted only once each time he/she is arrested, and the arrest is counted in the month it occurs (not the month of the crime). Remember, several people can be arrested for the same offense or one person can be arrested on multiple charges. Therefore, if a person is arrested on multiple charges at the same time within the same jurisdiction, the arrest would be counted only once for the most serious offense. The same rule applies whether the arrestee is an adult or a juvenile. Caution must be taken not to compare the number of criminal offenses which occurred to the number of individuals arrested for a particular crime. There is not a direct correlation between the number of individuals arrested and the number of offenses reported. Adult Juvenile Murder Non Negligent Manslaughter 0 0 Manslaughter By Negligence 0 0 Forcible Rape 0 0 Robbery 3 0 Aggravated Assault 3 0 Burglary 1 0 Larceny 72 20 Motor Vehicle Theft 0 0 Other Assaults 17 0 Arson 0 0 Forgery 2 0 Fraud 6 2 Embezzlement 0 0 Stolen Property 1 0 Vandalism 6 1 Weapons 0 1 Prostitution 2 0 Other Sex Offenses 0 0 Drug Violations 11 3 Gambling 0 0 Other Family Offenses 1 0 DUI 39 0 Liquor Law Violations 2 0 Drunkenness Disorderly Conduct 10 0 Vagrancy 0 All Other Offenses 312 9 Curfew Violations 0 Runaways 0 Total Number of Arrests 488 36 As you can see Glendale is doing more than just arresting prostitution. Too bad their isn't a stat showing the relationship to the additional crimes commited by the prostitutes, such as drug possession with intent to distribute (Pot or Meth), DUI's just to get to their in-call location, how about the recovery rate of the missing persons, or people with warrants for sex assault, maybe a found stolen vehicle, how about in the end a arrest changed their life by deterring them from prostitution therefore protecting them from pimps, drug overdose and so on. If you think your gonna catch a prostitute by sitting their asking for sex with your clothes on your wrong.

  • D. Hopkins 11/09/2007 10:34:00 PM

It is clear to me that Turf is only half (or less) educated about this story. I come from a diverse background of law enforcement and I am aware that, simply, the officers involved in this investigation are lawfully unable to comment until the investigation comes to conclusion. If Turf contacted them for comment, they would have, of course, been unable to respond, and his article would thereby seem biased, or be inaccurate, or both. Turf is only able to report half of this story. Further, we are all aware of how much the media loves to try to dig up dirty police/politician/priest stories. The problem is that these reports hinder our system's truth and justice seeking efforts, right down to jury selection. Another thing to consider would be that The People's Republic of Glendale is the size of a postage stamp. The crimes that are committed in Glendale are generally done so by individuals who live nowhere near. Luring hookers, and whomever else, into being busted is a service that reaches far outside of the Glendale jurisdiction, and thereby benefits this entire state. The direct benefit to Glendale will be that the network of hookers, pushers, and pimps will see the area as one that does not put up with any shit. Granted, the tactics law enforcement officers have to employ, in order to conduct these stings, are uncomfortable to even consider. Unfortunately, prostitutes are savvy to the methods undercover officers use to conduct a prosecutable "business deal". Even in these transcripts, it is clear that Gross had to reassure his mark by disrobing, and this, to a prostitute, seems proof that he is a safe, regular John. Of course this officer's wife would be uncomfortable with this. You can't show me one spouse of a cop who isn't perpetually nerve-racked by the hazards of the job. To believe that Gross is getting sexual satisfaction from these operations is absurd. Frankly, I'm impressed that Gross was able to get it up in the presence of such ghastly creatures; a testament to his dedication.

  • Mary 11/09/2007 9:38:00 PM

I may not be up on the arguments for the legalization of prostitution, but I would want something done if I lived next door to prostitution. I live near downtown, and quite frankly the drug dealers and prostitutes scare me. The article makes it look like the police officer got sexual gratification, however the article only talks about the officer only being touched, then immediately after, the prostitute rightly so, got arrested. This seems like police practice, as I am sure I even so something like it on law and order. All one needs to do is drive by the high school on Colfax and see the VERY young girls standing out there. It breaks my heart, that sadly, some of them are not even adults. Its not ok for women to sell themselves, and I dare say that any woman would tell you that almost all of the women out there, who feel they have to resort to that kind of behavior, are in the most despite of states. They need help (from men alike), and not more men (obviously I use the term men loosely) supporting what they do, thereby keeping them suppressed for the mans own self gratification.

  • Tony 11/09/2007 4:19:00 PM

Wow!!! That last comment was very interesting. Just shows the ignorance some folks have about prostitution. I happen to know that there are missing children, murderers and drug dealers who are involved deeply in prostitution. Most criminals commit more than just one type of crime - duh... Lots of runaways and/or missing children prostitute themselves in order to try and survive the streets - duh...Prosititutes get murdered by murderers - duh... Lots of drug dealers are pimps of prostitutes and sell drugs to our children - duh. Folks really... get a clue!!!

  • Joyce 11/09/2007 3:15:00 PM

Umm....Maybe the nine "boys in blue", could use their time more wisely by concentrating on all the missing children in this country, or direct their efforts against the huge war on drugs....or even catch a muderer or two....And they could do it all with their PANTS ON. How about that...an idea to consider. Maybe it's time to prioritize. Listen fellows, if my son or daughter was missing, I would hope that case would take precendence over a prostitute "sting" operation...Maybe just not as much fun working with your clothes on though. I expect more out of all criminal law enforcement employees...You "super nine" are an embarrassment to all the hard working, honest, and diligent police department personel everywhere. Fortunately there are more of THEM then you.

  • Fred 11/09/2007 3:13:00 PM

Westword has now publicly acknowleged that the ads on their backpage.com contains terms used in the prostitution industry that clearly aids and furthers acts of prostitution by allowing prostitutes to advertise to their customers. By allowing such ads in the future, Westword publisher Patty Calhoun should be arrested and prosecuted for aiding and abetting, or furthering acts of prostitution. In the past, the paper may have been able to claim "ignorance" over the meaning of such terms....well - no longer!!

  • Chris 11/09/2007 3:12:00 PM

It is truly refreshing to learn that so many law abiding, upstanding citizens, are willing to give police officers carte blanche to do whatever is necessary to protect our streets from these dangerous criminals. If only everyone would leave these nice policemen alone maybe we could have a nice little country comparable to the Germany of old. And the whole, "I'm cool with it as long as his wife is cool with it" logic is so idiotic it deserves no response.

  • Johnnie 11/09/2007 2:34:00 PM

What did he do wrong? You guys make it sound like some form of conspiracy involved in a cover-up..........of what? All I see is "the real hero" Lambert sounds like the "real crybaby" since he's the only one making all of the accusations. And Moya, don't suppose you took payment out in trade for your great defense work? Why don't you do a story on that....

  • Kristy 11/09/2007 5:47:00 AM

Does Luke Turf actually believe half of the crap that he writes? I know the attorney is just trying to get the best deal for his hooker client (ahhh, taking a deferred judgement is pleading guilty, hellllooo?)but the author and the professor he dug up at Metro don't sound like they have a clue. Cops across the hall, audio recordings, arrests for prostitution, drugs, sounds pretty good to me. You don't think any of these Ho's hesitated in going into Glendale, or anywhere else for that matter, but you had an issue making it sound like they were lured there? WHAT???? And you don't think that hookers would start to figure out the that undercover police aren't the cops when they're the only "Johns" not taking their clothes off to have sex? And your paper and website have hundreds of ads for hookers, what kind of message are you trying to send? I know, let's have the cops sit around on their asses and not do anything, and not arrest anyone, and let's have the criminals do whatever they want. Come on Turf, let's have responsible reporting for a change.

  • Wendy 11/09/2007 4:57:00 AM

I live in Glendale and I really don't care what the cops have to do to arrest hookers. No matter what the crime is, undercover officers have to "act" like they're the bad guys; that's why they call it "Undercover". If that cops wife is ok with it, I'm ok.

  • Sara 11/09/2007 4:52:00 AM

I agree with Jacky (above). Usually the media will cling to any story that makes the police look bad. Who cares if the police are arresting bad guys and protecting law abiding citizens like me from being victimized by the common criminal. I think most citizens don't understand what law enforcement officers have to endure on a day to day basis. The police risk their lives for you and me and they rarely get a "Thanks!" Most of us citizens live in a world believing everything is rosy until something goes wrong and the police are needed. Other than that, police are corrupt, unfair and badge heavy - right? In reading this article, it's very apparent that this story is jaded and tells only one side of a very bias sounding story. Obviously, there's something to be gained by those who purport this alleged incident and article. Imagine, living in a world where everyone, not just cops, are all guilty until proven innocent. Why is it the other way around for criminals; they're always innocent until proven guilty. I have to ask the writer of this alleged incident...DO YOU HAVE ALL THE "FACTS" OR ARE YOU JUST TRYING TO SELL MORE PAPERS AND MAYBE GET PROMOTED YOURSELF??????

  • Early 11/09/2007 4:44:00 AM

Once again, more idiotic banter from people trying to justify the illegal behavior of others, and take pop shots at police trying to do their jobs. After the typical defense attorney semantics trying to hide obvious prostitues engaged in illegal activity by saying they are just people the police hope are prostitutes (never mind the fact they're in a hotel agreeing to sex for money with a stranger), and the fact that most either pled guilty or failed to show up for court, we get this stupidity about notes being thrown away when they have everything recorded?? Give me a break. Sure doesn't sound like any of the girls complained about anything being wrong, just some lawyer. I'd like to thank the cops for trying to do something about the hookers here in town, and I hope Arapahoe County investigators do the right thing. If not, I for one am tired of D.A.'s going after police for no reason...if not, I think it's about time to find other representatives that will make the right decesions based upon what's best for the community, not themselves.

  • Frank 11/09/2007 3:26:00 AM

My comment is exactly the same as Frank Moya, one of the defense attorneys for one of the alleged prositutes... "When you boil this thing down, what it amounts to is that Glendale police decide they don't have enough crime in their city, so they hatch a plot to lure some people from out of town, people they hope are prostitutes, so they can bust them," Moya says." I think that's about it in a nutshell. The police were clearly out of line by undressing to the naked state and allowing sexual contact after luring these people to Glendale.

  • Jacky 11/08/2007 9:10:00 PM

Wow, this article is brilliant. If your intention is to crucify hard working police officers that put their lives on the line every day and get some more whores on the street. Gosh, I wish more news papers would fly a two page flag for prostitution. You do not get promoted to Lieutenant by being a slouch, so at some point this officer was saving someone that was loved by a mother, a child, a wife. If every cop on the force in every county in the state let these prostitutes stick a big black dildo up there anus I would still say PROSTITUTION IS ILLEGAL and showing your penis to whore is not. UNLESS you are trying to use the system (and the local newspaper) to get your whore off when she gets caught and doesn't want to go to jail or pay a fine.
