Feast of the Senses
Musical group Planina offers a cookbook with its concert.
In 2005, Jim Schwartzkopff went to Bulgaria with Planina — a Colorado-based group of Eastern European folk musicians — to live in a village and learn the music that sounds so foreign to Western ears. Few members of the group have Eastern European heritage, so they wanted to immerse themselves in the culture.
Schwartzkopff found that the celebration of music, dance and food is integral to Bulgarian village life. Planina has always made celebration a part of its performances, too, and tonight the group will go one step further by releasing a new cookbook at its Harvest Sampler concert. Everything in the book — from Russian crepes to Greek lamb stew and Bulgarian cheese pastry — has been kitchen-tested to make sure the old family recipes still make sense.
Admission is $20, or $17 for students and seniors; the music starts at 8 p.m. at the Avalon Ballroom, 6185 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder. Tickets are available at the door, but buying them in advance will help the group plan for food samples, which are included in the ticket price.
