Out of the Ashes

Eugene O'Neill's More Stately Mansions might never have seen the light of day: The second (after Touch of the Poet) in a projected cycle of plays following the New England-ensconced Harford family through history, its over-long draft was burned in the fireplace, along with other unfinished works, by the declining O'Neill and his wife, Carlotta, in 1943. But the shrewd Ms. Monterey later included a second draft in her literary gifts to her husband's archive at Yale University, where it was discovered and later adapted into a finished script by a Swede, Dr. Karl Ragnar Gierow, who first produced the play overseas.
