Hooked on Humor

The Comedy Addiction Tour plays a serious subject for laughs.

According to Mark Lundholm, star attraction of the Comedy Addiction Tour, "There's only one story worth talking about, ever; I don't care if it's the Bible or Harry Potter. And that story is redemption."

Lundholm knows this tale intimately. He's a former substance abuser who polished comedy routines about his fall and rise by performing at jails, rehab centers and shelters — alternative venues he refers to generically as "the penal circuit." After taking his act to comedy clubs in the early '90s, he developed a successful one-man show dubbed Addicted: A Comedy of Substance. And now he's broadening his scope with a little help from Billy Robinson, Kurtis Matthews and Jesse Joyce, all of whom have addiction experiences of their own. The subject's a heavy one, but Lundholm says wringing comedy from it is a snap for a veteran of the game. "Humor is a muscle," he notes, "and when it comes to humor, I've been in the gym for a long time."

Lundholm and friends gather tonight at 7 p.m. at the Donald R. Seawell Grand Ballroom in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; tickets are $28 to $33. Additional details are available at 303-893-4100 or www.denvercenter.org.
