Sound System

Grab a boombox or some speakers for your MP3 player and join in the performance of Phil Kline's Unsilent Night tonight in Boulder. Here's how it works: Participants will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the corner of 15th and Pearl Streets in Boulder with a portable sound system in tow. Once cassettes and CDs are distributed — MP3s should be downloaded ahead of time from www.cu-pendulum.com/unsilent.htm — a procession will begin down the Pearl Street Mall. The result — an unpredictable mix of chiming bells, singing voices and electronic tones emitting simultaneously from dozens of sources — will be a beautiful, ever-shifting wash of sound. "This year we wanted to do something downtown to reach out to new audiences," says Hsing-ay Hsu, artistic administrator of the Pendulum concert series. "There are a lot of adventurous people here, so we hope this will make them excited about new music." The event, which is performed yearly in numerous cities worldwide, is free and open to all ages. For details, visit www.cu-pendulum.com or www.philkline.com, or e-mail questions to cupendulum@gmail.com.
