The Irish Heart

Like the classic Riverdance duality of a rigid upper body and fluid legs, the Irish heart embraces a love of life matched only by its maudlin sentimentality. It's this emotional crossroads — played out on the dock of Cobh (pronounced Cove) in County Cork — that The Christmas Revels: An Irish Christmas is centered on.

Today starting at 2 and 7 p.m. at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder, those high-kicking nineteenth-century men, women and children awaiting departure for America provide a brief glimpse into the Irish soul. Using researched conversations and a journal entry from the time, a cultural heritage unfolds in song and dance with the help of 2006 North American Stepdancing Champion Alexander Siega, an Irish band, the Flagstaff Brass Quintet and a sixteen-piece children's choir.

"It's based on the conflict of going to a new continent and the difficulty of knowing you may never see your homeland, family or friends again," says Karen Romeo, artistic director. "Irish love the sentimentality and sadness of life. Their interactions give the audience a sense of who they are, where they've been and what they're doing."

Tickets range from $14.75 to $31.50; for more information, go to www.bouldertheater.com or call 303-786-7030.
Sun., Dec. 16, 2 & 7 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 22, 2 & 7 p.m., 2007
