Gather Around

Colorado Homegrown Tales gets In a Holiday Mood.

"It's like storytime for grownups," says Debbie Knapp, a performer for Colorado Homegrown Tales — a dramatic-reading series highlighting stories by local authors. "It's a nice way to take a break from the holiday mayhem, harking back to the tradition of getting everyone together for the holidays and telling funny family stories."

Starting tonight at 7 p.m. in the intimate front parlor of the Byers-Evans House, 1310 Bannock Street, In a Holiday Mood is a chance to forget — if only for a night — about overzealous elbow-jabbing shoppers, pushy in-laws and Yuletide traffic. The four dramatically read stories range in tenor from heartwarming to offbeat and humorous, and include, according to Knapp, two pieces that are "not your typical holiday stories," as well as "Vaughn, New Mexico, Christmas Eve 1956," a memory piece by playwright and director Terry Dodd that's reminiscent of Dylan Thomas's A Child's Christmas in Wales.

Tickets are $10. For more information, go to www.homegrowntales.com; call 720-233-0811 for reservations.
Fri., Dec. 21, 7 p.m.; Dec. 22-23, 4 & 7 p.m., 2007
