Last Rites

The art of last-minute shopping.

Sometimes you just can't find the right thing for the right person, and as the Christmas shopping days continue to dwindle, you wring your hands in despair. Or maybe you've been lazy. Whatever the case, you'd better look sharp: Santa lands in a mere five days, and you don't want to get caught empty-handed. But aren't the shelves at the malls and just about every other store in town starting to look a wee bit shopworn and empty? It's time to turn in a brave new direction: Why not visit some galleries and other artsy nooks and crannies, where you're likely to find something completely different...and conveniently last-minute?

Tucked into RiNo's urban live-work paradise, Taxi, you'll find the Taxi Art Store, 3457 Ringsby Court, where resident artist Susan Wick has been featuring works by different guests weekly on Thursdays throughout December. Today's the last open house; visit during lunch or after work, any time from noon to 7 p.m. For details, call 303-382-1820 or go to www.taxibyzeppelin.com/taxi_Zwick.htm.

Creep east on Colfax, and you'll find unexpected treasures at the new fine crafts emporium CO/RK Gallery, 2220 East Colfax Avenue, where delicate, hand-blown ornaments by glass artist Brad Chadez are in the spotlight through January 3; call 303-399-2675 or visit www.corkgallery.com. And farther down the drag in Aurora, the invitational group show My Favorite Things continues through December 29 at East End Applied Arts, 1556 Florence Street, featuring an abundance of original works by artists from Colorado and beyond in a myriad of mediums, with a focus on the functional. For details, call 303-506-8727 or go to www.eastendarts.com. Nearby, at Downtown Aurora Visual Arts, 1405 Florence Street, Wonders/Maravillas, the annual holiday show by DAVA's young artists, also continues; call 303-367-5886 or go to www.davarts.org.

Or save yourself for the monthly Santa Fe Art District Collectors Night, on December 21 from 5 to 8 p.m., where several galleries, including the Russian Ark Gallery, 931 Santa Fe Drive (303-534-1677); Abecedarian Gallery, 900 Santa Fe Drive, Suite A (303-340-2110); the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, 772 Santa Fe Drive (303-571-0440); and Artists on Santa Fe, 747 Santa Fe Drive (303-573-5903) are all hosting holiday-oriented shows with gift-giving in mind. Visit www.artdistrictonsantafe.com for information.

And finally, for the conservative art lover in your little book, consider dropping by the Great Western Art Gallery, 1455 Curtis Street, where the Artisan and Miniature Holiday Show, which includes everything from raku pottery to tiny paintings, is on display through Christmas Eve. Call 303-396-0279 or log on to www.greatwesternartgalleryllc.com. In the same representational vein, Abend Gallery continues its annual tradition by hosting a Holiday Miniatures Show through December 29; call 303-355-0950 or visit www.abendgallery.com.
