Bruised by Fate

Life can change in an instant, and sometimes that change disrupts or even destroys the carefully wrought plans we’ve made for the future. In DarkBlueAlmostBlack — which ends its run tomorrow as part of Cinema Q’s film series at the Starz FilmCenter in the Tivoli — Jorge (Quim Gutiérrez) is forced to put his life and career on hold after his father suffers a stroke. He takes over his father’s job as a janitor, cares for dear old Dad and studies at night, all while attempting to navigate confusing relationships and romantic entanglements with women.

In the meantime, Jorge’s best friend, Israel, is struggling with his sexual identity. Israel and Jorge spend time together hanging out on a rooftop, where they spy on a mas-sage parlor and discover that Israel’s estranged father is a customer of a male masseuse therein. It’s an examination of what happens when individual desires are suppressed and ignored because of family obligations.

DarkBlueAlmostBlack runs at 2:15, 4:35, 7:05 and 9:20 p.m.; tickets are $5.75 to $8.75. For information, visit www.denverfilm.org or call 303-595-3456
