Rock This Way

Guitarist/vocalist Daniel Sproul wasn’t even a zygote when Aerosmith released 1975’s Toys in the Attic, which he and his fellow twenty-somethings in Rose Hill Drive will perform in its entirety tonight and tomorrow night in Boulder. But he discovered the LP at a formative age. “I got into that when I was in seventh or eighth grade,” he re-calls, adding, “Aerosmith really shaped my life and shaped our music.”

This isn’t the first time Sproul’s group has tackled a vintage rock platter on New Year’s Eve. The players previously put their own spin on Led Zeppelin’s debut and Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys. Still, the boys are especially busy right now: They just completed a European tour, and early next year, they plan to release their second full-length, a self-produced disc cut at Boulder’s Coupe Studios. He’s especially psyched about tracks such as “Sneak Out,” an exercise in drop tuning, and “One Night Stand,” which he calls “kind of acoustic — but I used a bow on it to make it sound like a cello.” Fortunately, the group used to play Attic tracks such as “Walk This Way” during their cover-band days, and Sproul thinks four or five practices should be enough to master the rest of the platter. “That record’s really been a big influence on us,” he allows. “It’ll be really fun to share it with people.”

The Drive starts at 9 p.m. at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street, joined by opening act the Meat Puppets. Tickets are $20 to $29.50. Get details at 303-786-7030 or www.bouldertheater.com.
