Anti-Fest

"We're embracing our un-Hollywoodness," says Jonathan Goldman, director of FESTIVUS, a new film festival unspooling tonight. "A lot of festivals get their programming from other festivals. But the only thing that determines if someone is in or out of FESTIVUS is the quality of the films."

According to Goldman, FESTIVUS, named for a faux holiday made famous on Seinfeld, features "54 films that cross the entire spectrum. We have comedies, dramas, documentaries, action, animation, experimental, music videos and everything in between." Even devoted cineastes will probably be unfamiliar with movies such as Wasting Away, a zombie flick in which the walking dead are more sympathetic than the rest of mankind. But in Goldman's view, discovering something new is half the fun.

FESTIVUS begins at 6 p.m. at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue, and the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street. Single-screening tickets are $6, with day- and full-festival passes available. Learn more at 720-221-3586 or www.festivusfilmfestival.com.
