Badi Music

A multitasking virtuoso stops at the Newman Center.

Badi Assad is a real 21st-century animal: A multi-tasker within a multi-tasker, she nimbly rips through difficult guitar runs while humming and tongue-clicking rhythms simultaneously. Oh, and did I mention that she sings, too? Beautifully? Assad, the little sister of famed classical guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad (and a Villa-Lobos International Guitar Competition winner by the time she was eighteen), deftly sidesteps all preconceptions of virtuosity when she performs, exuding energy and sparkle to an inner Brazilian beat.

With a repertoire that journeys adventurously between classic and current, Assad will charm the masses when she performs solo tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, 2344 East Iliff Avenue, flawlessly intermingling her own compositions with timeless Brazilian tunes and pop picks from the likes of U2 and Björk. Concert admission is $25 to $49; to reserve tickets, log on to www.ticketmaster.com or call 303-357-ARTS.
Sat., Jan. 19, 7:30 p.m., 2008
