Cold Run

Jump aboard the Winter Distance Series.

Well, here's a race that tells it like it is: The Frosty's Frozen 5 is just what it says it is, and a bit more. Featuring both five- and ten-mile courses, the second leg of the Winter Distance Series will be run regardless of frigid and icy conditions, through the drifting barrens of Chatfield State Park. The races, which benefit the Fetal Hope Foundation, begin today at 10 a.m. at the park's Swim Beach parking lot, accessible from the Wadsworth exit off C-470. Park entrance is free for participants.

And what will you get for your trouble and entry fees (which range from $30 to $40) besides rosy cheeks, burning lungs and frozen ears? A long-sleeved T-shirt, a one-year subscription to Colorado Runner magazine, numerous wildlife sightings and a fail-safe opportunity to commune with Ma Nature. Not to mention the right to tell people that you did it. Go to www.winterdistanceseries.com to register; if you catch the bug at Frosty's, you'll also find information there about February's Snowman Stampede race at Cherry Creek State Park, which ups the long-distance ante to ten or twenty miles.
