Climbing High

Spray is filmmaker Brian Solano's fourth project about rock climbing, but don't expect a typical adrenaline-driven climbing flick this time around. "It's a movie about climbing and exploring and just living life," Solano says, but it's also about maintaining climbing areas for future generations.

"Throughout the entire film, we kind of touch on some issues: Our climbing areas are very fragile, and access to them is not our God-given right, it's a privilege," he explains. "Climbers need to understand that and take care of the areas, and we need to be respectful of where we are climbing. You want your friends and everyone else to be able to enjoy the area in the same way that you did."

Spray follows professional climbers Joe Kinder and Chris Lindner as they embark on a sport-climbing and bouldering adventure through Northern California, exploring the beaches of Arcata, the limestone of the Trinity Aretes, the shores of Mickey's Beach and the alpine stone of Donner Summit. Tonight's screening at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder, is the film's world premiere; ticket-holders will receive a free day pass to the Spot Bouldering Gym, and the first 200 guests through the door receive a pair of socks from Smartwool. Tickets are $12; visit www.bouldertheater.com or call 303-786-7030.
