Instruments and Imbolc

This Candlemas celebration features something different.

If you're not afraid to go a little out of the way for the chance to hear something truly unique, plan a trip tonight to the Syzygy Community House, 51 Paula Avenue in Rollinsville, for the Imbolc/Candlemas Celebration. The highlight of the evening will be the first Colorado performance in five years by Mark Deutsch, the inventor and world's only player of the bazantar, which melds an acoustic bass with a sitar. The instrument's sound is at once familiar and otherworldly, combining the comfortable low-end pulse of a standup bass with the eerie drones and resonant buzzing tones of a sitar. Deutsch's performance will be accompanied by modern dance from Jen Jones and Hallie Bauerschmidt. The performance starts at 8 p.m., but come up earlier to join the Imbolc ritual at 5 p.m. Admission is $20 and seating is limited, so reservations are required. To make yours, or for more information, call 303-258-0541; visit www.bazantar.com to learn more about Deutsch and the bazantar.
