War is Hell

The War Rant offers strength in numbers.

Poets hate war, especially this one. And they all do readings that push their own anti-war agendas. But that's often just one lone voice screaming into the wilderness.

"Wouldn't it be nice to have thirty voices screaming into the wilderness?" That thought, posed by local poet Wayne Gilbert, sparked fellow poet Ted Vaca to organize War Rant, with thirty of Denver's finest poets each reading one poem of peace and protest.

Vaca figured if he got Chris Ransick to perform, the other poets would follow, and he was right. And just in case the scene gets too depressing, he's also bringing in music from Zebra Junction and Nicole Torres and the Affiliates. The majority of the evening's proceeds will benefit a soldier with a traumatic brain injury. But Vaca will also use a portion to help the Denver VA Medical Center purchase Nintendo Wii systems, which the hospital uses to restore hand-eye coordination in patients.

The show starts at 7 p.m. at the Aztlan Theatre, 974 Santa Fe Drive; admission is $12. For information, call 303-861-1366 or e-mail tedvaca@gmail.com.
