Moral Fiber
Fiber artist, single mother and business owner Deborah Kruger is all those things and more: She's also Jewish, a feminist and profoundly inspired by the indigenous artists of West Africa and the Amazon, and thus the product of a unique triumvirate that figures in equal proportions throughout her work, in both subtle and obvious ways. Working in a medium she calls textile painting, Kruger creates triangular, feather-like wall hangings from slivers of fiber layered heavily with encaustic, oil stick, waxed linen and beads.
Several will go on view tonight at Translations Gallery, 773 Santa Fe Drive; Kruger's show, New Work: Fiber and Encaustic, opens with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. A 6:30 p.m. gallery talk by the artist (also a renowned lecturer and workshop leader) on creativity, feminism and art is included in the evening's festivities; New Work continues through March 15.
