Prefab Pitfalls

A new seminar teaches everything you need to know about prefab houses.

After finding a fantastic plot of land near Salida, Jill Warner and husband Erick Roorda thought it would be a cinch to build and set up the custom-designed prefab house they'd been dreaming about for years.

It wasn't.

Complications arose. Confusion ensued. Undaunted, they waded in and began sorting out the myriad issues that cropped up — water rights, zoning laws and plenty more. Now they're offering a free seminar called Every Man's Modern Prefab, a six-month lecture series designed to simplify the process of building your own custom prefab home. "The whole premise of the series is, my husband and I were so amazed at how hard it is when it seems it could be really easy," Warner says. "And now people can learn from our mistakes." Despite the potential pitfalls, Warner says the environmentally friendly housing is as affordable as buying an existing house, with the advantage of being designed from scratch for your specific needs.

It happens at 6 p.m. at Mod Livin', 5327 East Colfax, and continues on the third Thursday of every month afterward. Attendance is free, and complimentary refreshments will be offered. Information is available at 720-941-9292 or www.modlivin.com/events.cfm.
Third Thursday of every month. Starts: Jan. 17. Continues through July 17, 2008
