Too much of a good thing? Never! Especially not in Denver's select independent retail wilderness, where lasting long enough to make it can often be a financial struggle. And in the case of these Westword Best of Denver recipients — the Broadway craft supply and hip-wear emporium Fancy Tiger and the Highlands Square jewelry haven Studio Bead — it's reason to celebrate: Both shops are changing for the better this month.

When the American Vogue space came up vacant earlier this year, Fancy Tiger fashion maven Matthew Brown jumped at the chance to expand the clothing end of the existing store into a part of the vacant storefront at 14 South Broadway. Meanwhile, back at 1 South Broadway, his partner and craft specialist Jaime Jennings has been able to add new fabric and yarn lines to the floor in preparation for spring classes, including quilting and apron workshops. A fashion show featuring fresh mixed-and-matched clothes for men and women in graphic prints, bold colors and a handcrafted aesthetic will be just one part of the festivities when the catty-corner shops mark the expansion, tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. at both locations. Studio Bead, ironically, slipped demurely into a slightly smaller space, although one with a higher profile and brand-new inventory, at 3716 West 32nd Avenue, just "23 steps west of the old location," as owner Joy Barrett likes to say. But the bubbly bead retailer/jewelry artist sweetened the niche well, with vintage suitcases bolted to the wall for display shelves and a cozy mini bead bar for after-hours workshops. Alas, Barrett's opening celebration took place last night, but that's no reason not to drop by any time for beads, trinkets and, perhaps, a bit of chocolate from Le Chocolatier next door. Mmm.
