Snow Boat

Why create a "boatercross" that sends kayakers barreling down a snow-covered mountain course with banked corners, berms, rollers and jumps?

Why not?

In its third year at Monarch Mountain, Kayaks on Snow is the kind of event that just organically came to be. "Our home town, Salida, down the road, is a big boating community," says Eric Ramsey at Monarch. "It seemed like the perfect transition from winter into the spring and summer boating seasons."

This year, New Belgium Brewing Company signed on as the title sponsor and will be giving away swag and prizes. Registration, which starts at 10 a.m., is $20 and includes a T-shirt. Practice starts at 11, and single-elimination runs begin at 1. Spectators are welcome to watch the event for free from the base lodge. "Springtime here in central Colorado, the days are nice and long and sunny and warm," Ramsey says. "It's a festive environment here, quite the spectator event. I think spectators may even have more fun than the participants do."

Monarch is located 137 miles southwest of Denver via U.S. highways 285 and 50. For more information, go to www.skimonarch.com or call 1-888-996-7669.
